Erik Prince, founder of the private security firm Blackwater, filed a defamation lawsuit against The Intercept last month over an article published in 2020 that examined his efforts to sell. So what I'm saying is from Richard Seddon's standpoint, the fact that she had a picture up on Project Veritas Exposed, that was a real risk they were taking, right? I have always understood him to be a resident of Northern Virginia, the lead writer of The Intercepts April story, Matthew Cole, wrote in a declaration. But what is clear is if Beau and Sofia made these campaign contributions - right? Erik Prince decides that Project Veritas needs something new. According to the documents, Mr. Seddons operatives also aimed to dig up information on Steve Harshman, the Republican speaker of the House in Wyoming at the time, who was also seen by some conservatives as not sufficiently supportive of Mr. Trump. Prince is under investigation by the Justice Department over whether he lied to a congressional committee examining Russian interference in the 2016 election, and for possible violations of American export laws. Presiding Judge Johnson, who is based in Cheyenne, has himself signaled some uncertainty about whether Wyoming is the right place for Princes case to be heard; in early November, Johnson asked the parties to submit additional briefs on either transferring the case to another district or delving further into the issues related to jurisdiction. Wyoming is not the place for security contractor Erik Prince to sue a New York-based publication, a federal judge says. And he comes from a wealthy, conservative family in Michigan, right? Mr. Seddon and Ms. Gore did not respond to messages. Although he owns a home in Wapiti, Prince is not generally known as a Wyoming businessman. But in a pending lawsuit, Prince asserts the April 13 story from The Intercept was false, defamatory and aimed at Wyoming. Because of the article, Prince says his reputation and professional opportunities within Wyoming suffered, along with his business interests and reputation in general. So we had never seen something like that. Sofia makes a contribution - a small contribution to a woman she had befriended who ran, unsuccessfully, for the Wyoming state legislature. ADAM GOLDMAN: They went there after making sizable donations to the DNC, the Democratic National Committee - $10,000 each - at the request of a Colorado businessman who was a - he's a fundraiser for the Democrats and basically said, if you make this donation, you can come and hang out in Las Vegas. You know, was it effective? The parties are currently awaiting a ruling from Judge Johnson, who could choose to allow the case to proceed in Wyoming; permit some more limited fact-gathering about the appropriate jurisdiction; transfer the case to New York; or throw it out entirely. When a muckraking news site published a story alleging private security contractor and Blackwater founder Erik Prince had offered his services to a Russian mercenary firm, the connections to Wyoming were not obvious; the state was never mentioned in the piece. He's proposed similar things in other countries, hasn't he? GOLDMAN: No. And last year, I learned that Beau and Sofia had been working out of this house in Georgetown. And he ends up giving, you know, $6,000 to Wyoming Democratic Party and also money to other political figures. The campaign discovered the operative and fired her. - trying to find, you know, damaging information on, you know, on political rivals, you know, using, you know, private investigative firms. And that one was made public. And as we quoted an expert in our story, you know, if there's a sudden pattern of somebody giving money to the Democrats and they had never done that before, you know, that could also raise suspicions. And they - the purpose for - they themselves will launch this undercover operation and then, you know, secretly record you - audio, video - and then make a video out of it and, you know, expose what they describe as wrongdoing. You know, we had - we talked to many, many people who worked there, and, you know, they described Seddon as wanting to do more long-term operations - right? GOLDMAN: Yeah, I would say an active - sure, an active player in certain parts of Trump's world, yeah, or conservative - the conservative world. I knew something was off immediately. This includes participating in marches or rallies in support of a movement or giving money to, or raising money for, any political candidate or election cause. The list included John Cox, then the director of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, and Scott Talbott, then the director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The job put her in a position to gain valuable information about which Republican candidates the group was supporting with independent advertising. Erik Prince doesn't live in the state, he's from the same party as the incumbent, Sen. John Barrasso, and he's best known for founding a private security firm, Blackwater, that was kicked out of . Now, you mentioned Project Veritas. A man named Samuel Chamberlain who matched the description of the one employed by Mr. OKeefe denied he worked for Project Veritas. You know, there was one exercise, I believe, where they had a cop - you know, a local cop who was there. Anyone can read what you share. GOLDMAN: Yes, the Government Accountability Office. Mr. She actually got a contract fundraising gig with the Democrats, right? GOLDMAN: Yes. The documents give new details about efforts to manipulate the politics of Wyoming. Efforts to locate Mr. Thomas were unsuccessful. GOLDMAN: Project Veritas is founded by James O'Keefe. Whether any Trump administration officials or advisers to the president were involved in the operations, even tacitly, is unclear. There's a long backstory there. The former Navy SEAL gained fame for the supporting role his Blackwater firm played in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the security contractor became infamous when its employees killed 14 Iraqi civilians and wounded 17 others in Baghdad in 2007. After Mr. Gordon won a close Republican primary battle against Mr. Friess, the billionaire, in August 2018, Mr. Friess blamed his loss on Democrats switching parties on Election Day to vote for Mr. Gordon. And the operatives had to give a - you know, had to give a cover story under duress. McMaster, Trump's second national security adviser. GOLDMAN: Yeah, I think they nearly tripled the number of people they hired. They were going to bug it. Princes parents, Elsa Prince and the late Edgar Prince, bought the 940-acre Double E Ranch in the Wapiti Valley in the early 1990s. They were, in fact, going to use a former Project Veritas operative named Tarah Price, who lives in the Dallas area, to, you know, possibly ensnare McMaster at a restaurant, get him to say something ill toward or maybe negative about Trump, something that would compromise him. For instance, Princes 2014 memoir said he splits his time between homes in Virginia and Abu Dhabi, where he pursues a variety of business ventures.. And they received what was essentially clandestine training at a ranch in Wyoming that's owned by the family of Erik Prince. That was certainly a catalyst. DAVIES: Right - Erik Prince, the security contractor who we'll talk more about. Did you receive the spare camera yet?. DAVIES: Right. And, you know, they targeted somebody from the State Department, and they targeted somebody from GAO. And ultimately, it did blow up in their face. Set some context for us here. Mr. Seddons role in the teachers union operation detailed in internal Project Veritas emails that have emerged from the discovery process of a court battle between the group and the union has not previously been reported, nor has Mr. Princes role in recruiting Mr. Seddon for the groups activities. Mr. Seddon wrote that Ms. Jorge copied a great many documents from the file room, and Mr. OKeefe bragged that the group would be able to get a ton more access agents inside the educational establishment.. But he was extremely wealthy conservative in Wyoming named Foster Friess, who had actually run for governor in '18. If he enters the race, he would be challenging Republican incumbent John Barrasso in the 2018 primaries, with the encouragement of Steve Bannon. Once a small operation running on a shoestring budget, Project Veritas in recent years has had a surge in donations from both private donors and conservative foundations. In 2017, Prince invited O'Keefe and Project Veritas employees to his family's Wyoming ranch and arranged for an unnamed former British MI6 officer to provide training for the group, The . GOLDMAN: Well, I don't know if he is primarily the guy. For his part, Prince swears he never met with anyone from Wagner Group a denial The Intercept included in its reporting. O'Keefe did not respond to the substance of the Times' report but did accuse the newspaper of running a "smear piece" on Project Veritas. And Beau's mom is the ranch cook at the Erik Prince family's ranch near Cody, Wyo. And they admitted doing, you know - engaging in political activity while working for these government institutions, which Project Veritas asserted was, you know, wrong or even, you know - I can't remember if they said it was illegal or not. And I think the end goal was make a video and, if necessary, try to get the White House to fire McMaster. Mr. OKeefe and others shared social media photos of taking target practice with guns at the ranch, including one post from Mr. OKeefe saying that with the training, Project Veritas will be the next great intelligence agency. Where we're not - what we hadn't really seen was an actual British spy, somebody trained in clandestine activities, launching a secret operation using undercovers with false - basically false cover stories to infiltrate political circles, gather information and collect it for whatever purpose, I guess, because ultimately, as our story says, this appeared to be a paper play. GOLDMAN: In some instances, they were on, you know, these social - these dating apps, right? You know, they were angry too, right? AFT Michigan sued Project Veritas in federal court, alleging trespassing, eavesdropping and other offenses. It also seems, to me, murky. Other Project Veritas employees on the emails include Joe Halderman, an award-winning former television producer who in 2010 pleaded guilty to trying to extort $2 million from the comedian David Letterman.
