A barrier island is a narrow strip of sandy beach, with or without vegetation, that forms an offshore island less than 20ft above sea level separated from the main shoreline by a narrow lagoon or marsh area that lies roughly at sea level, followed by the mainland, which can rise fairly quickly to between 10 and 50ft above sea level. When sea level was rising rapidly about 15,000 years ago, the waters moved too quickly to form barriers. Barrier formation through spit detachment generally requires a shallow headland bay complex where spit formation is followed by breaching at the updrift end and the preservation of the downdrift end as a barrier through bypassing of sediment across the inlet (Fisher, 1968; Armitage et al., 2006). More recently, massive nourishment projects have provided the potential for natural processes to return in some areas and more management options are now available. The most extensive mangrove coast in the United States is the southwest shore of Florida in the Everglades National Park and the region of Florida Bay. The island, 30 miles long and up to 3 miles wide, separates the Gulf of Mexico from West Bay, which is part of the Galveston Bay system. Replenish Inland Plant There is a growing body of literature on the potential acceleration of barrier erosion and migration as a result of increased rates of sea-level rise and attempts to model this on a decadal scale (Dean and Maurmeyer, 1983; Dubois, 1995; Eitner, 1996; List et al., 1997; Moore et al., 2007; FitzGerald et al., 2008; Plater et al., 2009). If sea level changes are too drastic, time will be insufficient for wave action to accumulate sand into a dune, which will eventually become a barrier island through aggradation. WebUnfortunately, however, there are global trends in barrier size reduction because of reduced sediment input caused by damming rivers, human modifications to coastal systems, storm-driven erosion, and relative sea level rise. This allowed sediments to be shaped into barriers without being swept out to deeper water. Dean and Maurmeyer adapted the Bruun rule for the special case of a barrier island and their model allowed for overwash and inlet transfers. In the figure, the top of the seaward sequence begins at the dune field and the bottom is the end of the barrier island near the ocean after the marsh one would expect a marine facies. Each barrier island can be divided into four zones, including the ocean shoreline, the sand dunes, the back barrier and tidal inlets and deltas. Prolonged sinking of the marshes behind the barriers has converted these former vegetated wetlands to open-water areas. Presently, Johns Pass delivers about 80% of the tidal prism, and Blind Pass only 20%. Less is known about the creation of barrier islands, and two theories exist regarding their origin.
